Zanzibar is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Tanzania. It comprises Zanzibar Island (also known as Unguja), Pemba Island, and several smaller islands. Zanzibar has a rich history dating back at least 20,000 years, with evidence of human habitation during the Later Stone Age. The island was an important trading center, with influences from Arabs, Portuguese, and British colonial powers. In 1964, Zanzibar merged with Tanganyika to form Tanzania, with Zanzibar retaining a degree of autonomy.
